songs about roving, rambling and plain hard luck & photography from the other side …

a handful of lightening, a hat full of rain

© Hirtenstr., Berlin, 2013, Florian Fritsch

Money’s just something you throw off the back of a train / Got a handful of lightening, a hat full of rain / And I know that I said I’d never do it again / And I love you pretty baby but I always take the long way home (Tom Waits)

A nice reflection of everyday consumerlife. Buy and be bought

There are the rich layers of reflections. And there are all these black hats. Hats waiting for their man. Hats that will be someday full of rain.

Hats are not ordinary products made for consumers. Hats are very special things. Maybe because they are made for heads. They are crowns for ordinary people.

And the installation here enhances this ability that hats have for us, ordinary people. A special hat for every special guy.

That’s brilliant, Florian. Nothing really special escapes your eyes.

And one more thing: makes me think of Marepe’s installations. When art and (not so) mundane objects go the same long way home.

Again, only the hint of the human, through an idea or an object. I love the graphic side of this, lines all over, little rectangular patches of dark or light grey, and little round shapes

  8. ay, Fritsch, buddy – Elvis never wore a hat, even if he was a blue rock’n’roller just like you!

great shot – and, oh man, do we know all about hats full of rain up here in Bergen, btw …

    Hepp!

A handful of lightening and a hatful of rain…a life full of storms and trouble. All the hats, and all the people they could represent with all their own troubles and taking the long way home–when the true desire is to be anywhere else at all. It’s interesting how a photograph of a fashion item wedded to the song about a down-and-outer could remind us of a harsher side of life. Black magic here, Florian. Quite a melding, indeed.
